January 24: Dharma Gathering with Guest Speaker Judy Lief
“In the stories of the Buddha’s enlightenment, Mara, “the Evil One,” sends his daughters, the four maras, to tempt Shakyamuni and his armies to attack him. Vanquishing them, Shakyamuni becomes the Buddha, “the Awakened One.”
— Chögyam Trungpa
An important skill to develop as dharma students and as human beings is discernment, the ability to distinguish friend from enemy. Teachings such as nonattachment or nonduality do not absolve us of our responsibility to confront our inner and outer enemies and to nourish our inner and outer friends. This discussion will be a chance to investigate the obstacles we face, how we relate to them, where we find friends and support, and what we can learn from the interplay of friends and enemies on the path and in daily life.
Please join us for this special event with one of our closest spiritual friends, Judy Lief. Judy is a Buddhist teacher, writer, and editor. She was a close student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, who empowered her as a teacher, and she has edited many of his books including The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma volumes. She has been a teacher and practitioner for over 35 years and continues to teach and lead retreats throughout the world. Lief is also active in the field of death and dying and is the author of Making Friends with Death.
